Cost guide

Rent a photo studio: costs, equipment and production checklist

A compact guide to realistic studio costs, required data and inquiry prep.

How to plan budget and inquiry

Before getting to concrete numbers, three points are worth a look: how the day rate comes about in the first place, why the same rate can cover very different things, and how to turn that into an inquiry that gets a reliable answer fast.

Day rate, not line items

Studios are rented per shoot day at a market price, not by the hour and not through separately itemised line items such as cleaning, power or staff. A provider quotes a day rate that reflects their space, equipment and location - what it includes differs from studio to studio. So plan your budget per day and clarify early what the rate covers. The provider always sets the actual day rate.

Same day rate, different value

Two studios at the same day rate can offer very different things: one comes with a cyclorama, a strobe kit and a make-up area, the other rents the bare floor. Compare on price alone and you compare the wrong thing. Look at what each one includes and whether the gear, areas and infrastructure fit your production - that decides which offer is actually cheaper on the shoot day.

From research to a solid inquiry

The more precise your inquiry, the faster you get a reliable confirmation and a fitting price. Send the provider your motif, your target date and the crew size, plus the planned use, the setup and strike time you need, and any special lighting or sound requirements. That lets them assess availability and the day rate right away instead of having to ask back - and you avoid misunderstandings on the shoot day.

What does it cost to rent a photo studio?

Photo studios are rented per day, not by the hour. What moves the market price is above all the city, floor area and included gear. As a rough guide for a full shoot day in Germany:

Compact studio / basic setup
from €800/day
Mid-size studio with cyclorama & gear
€1,000–2,000/day
Large prime-location studio, fully equipped
€2,000–4,500/day

Indicative ranges based on typical market offers. Each host sets the actual day rate.

What affects the price

  • City and location, since Berlin, Hamburg and Munich sit above the national average.
  • Floor area, ceiling height and whether a cyclorama is available.
  • Included gear: flash kit, continuous light, backdrops, green screen.
  • Season and weekday plus the production effort, since a large set with a long build and strike pushes the market price.

Pre-inquiry checklist

Work through these points studio by studio before you send an inquiry, which keeps comparisons fair and avoids surprises on the shoot day.

Floor area, ceiling height and cyclorama

Usable floor area and clear ceiling height decide which sets, lighting rigs and camera moves are possible. Check whether a cyclorama exists and how large it is.

Light situation and blackout

Clarify window orientation, the amount of daylight, and whether the room blacks out fully. That tells you whether you can shoot with daylight, strobe or both.

Power and internet

Ask about the available circuits and three-phase power for lighting and gear, plus stable Wi-Fi for tethering and live client review.

Sound situation

For location sound, interviews or video, soundproofing, a quiet setting and reverberation matter. Check whether traffic or ventilation interferes with the sound.

Load-in and parking

Step-free access, a freight lift, a loading zone and parking decide how quickly gear, crew and catering reach the studio.

Make-up, changing and client area

For fashion, beauty and campaign productions the infrastructure around the set matters: a separate make-up and styling area, a client lounge, a kitchen and Wi-Fi.

Setup, strike and date

Plan setup and strike realistically into the shoot day and check availability for your target date, since good slots and popular rooms book up fast.

Allowed uses and house rules

Clarify the allowed uses, quiet hours and house rules so crew size, motif and equipment fit the room and there are no conflicts on the shoot day.
