International productions
Filming in Frankfurt as an international production
Frankfurt bundles filming applications at the Ordnungsamt. Plan private locations on SetScout and public-space permits with the city.
Permits for international crews
International crews apply through the same offices as German productions: the Ordnungsamt's Service-Center Veranstaltungen is the central point of contact, and the Beratungsstelle Film at the press and information office offers advice.
Lead times
The City of Frankfurt asks for all applications at least 14 days before the shoot.
Federal incentives: DFFF and GMPF
German Federal Film Fund (DFFF)
The DFFF supports feature films that are wholly or partly realised in Germany. DFFF I is for producers of national and international (co-)productions, DFFF II for production service providers. Since 2025 the grant is a uniform 30 per cent of the approved German production costs.
German Motion Picture Fund (GMPF)
The GMPF supports high-end series and films that are not intended for theatrical release, with up to 30 per cent of eligible German production costs. Applicants need a registered office or branch in Germany and a film or series produced in the last seven years.
Apply before you book
Both funds are administered by the German Federal Film Board (FFA). There are no fixed deadlines, but applications must arrive at least six weeks before principal photography starts, which is earlier than any city permit. Check the current funding volume with the FFA before you plan with it.

Film locations in Frankfurt
Filming locations in Frankfurt for film, commercials and photo
Frankfurt is the city of the skyline: bank towers, glass façades and conference floors sit just minutes away from Gründerzeit period buildings, cider taverns and industrial spaces along the Main.
Compare Frankfurt locations by motif, floor area and access, and clear availability and terms directly with the host.
Typical looks in Frankfurt
Frankfurt's motifs sit close together, and each district has a distinct visual language.
Banking district and skyline
High-rises, lobbies and office floors for corporate, finance and business scenes. In office towers, expect building management, security and fixed shooting windows outside business hours.
Westend, Nordend and Sachsenhausen
Gründerzeit period buildings, villas and quiet residential streets for domestic and family motifs; in Alt-Sachsenhausen also cider taverns and old-town lanes.
Ostend and Osthafen
Port and commercial areas, warehouses and converted industrial buildings for raw, urban looks with good access for equipment vehicles.
Bahnhofsviertel
Bars, clubs, neon and big-city edges in a tight space. Coordinating with residents and businesses matters especially here.
Practical notes for shooting in Frankfurt
The city centre is compact and busy. Plan parking, load-in and shooting windows early.
Parking and no-parking zones
In the city centre, Westend and Sachsenhausen you usually need a traffic order for equipment and catering vehicles. Applications should be in at least 14 days before the shoot.
Office towers and house rules
For high-rise motifs, clarify access, security, freight lift and permitted shooting times with building management before you plan the day.
Trade fair and event dates
During major trade fairs, hotels, parking and streets around the fairground are heavily booked. Check the calendar before fixing shoot days.
Filming permits in Frankfurt
For interior shoots on private property, the host's consent is enough. For pavements, squares and streets you need permits from the City of Frankfurt am Main.
Who is responsible
The central point of contact is the Ordnungsamt's Service-Center Veranstaltungen. Traffic measures such as closures and no-parking zones are decided by the road traffic authority, special use by the road construction authority. The Beratungsstelle Film at the press and information office offers advice.
Lead time
All applications should be submitted at least 14 days before the shoot.
